GEORADAR SERVICE

GEORADAR SERVICE

For the modernization and reinforcement planning of highways, expressways, and national roads, it is essential to have knowledge of the existing pavement structure, the thickness of pavement layers, and their condition. Traditional investigative methods, while providing point-specific information, are intrusive and typically offer only generalized section formation and sizing, often failing to reveal local pavement structure problems. Leveraging the advancements in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology, Roden Engineering Office Ltd. has developed a non-destructive road pavement diagnostic system that uniquely provides high-precision, continuous information necessary for modern design. The survey is conducted at a speed of 36 km/h, allowing for the simultaneous survey of longer road sections without lane closures or significant traffic disruptions.

PROVIDED DATA

  • Revealing the layer structure of the road pavement and its structural changes
  • High-precision determination of pavement layer thickness
  • Identification of homogeneous sections
  • Estimation of asphalt layer compactness, void content, and density – uncovering local problems
  • Detection and delineation of surface and subsurface road defects
  • Delimitation of sections affected by structural weakening

With all this data at hand, comprehensive assessment of road conditions and rationalization of pavement structure management becomes possible. The data provided by our Engineering Office can be used for planning, quality control, condition assessment, and renovation technology purposes.

ROADWAY DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM STRUCTURE

To implement roadway diagnostics, RODEN Engineering Office Ltd. has developed the RoadScan system by modifying a carrier vehicle, which uniquely integrates the following measuring systems for high-precision continuous data collection:

GEORADAR SYSTEM

The georadar system is manufactured by GSSI and consists of a multi-channel data acquisition and control system, a distance meter, and four air-coupled antennas. These antennas are positioned 1.5 meters behind the survey vehicle and 460 mm above the pavement surface. This arrangement ensures full coverage of the surveyed lane, reproducibility of measurements, and high-speed road scanning. The antennas operate within the frequency range of 1-2 GHz, making them ideal for comprehensive examination of both asphalt and road substructure. For tasks requiring deeper penetration, such as embankment and excavation investigations, our company also possesses the following handheld tools:

  • 200 MHz center frequency antenna (inspection range 0-9 m)
  • 400 MHz center frequency antenna (inspection range 0-4 m)
  • 300/800 MHz center frequency dual antenna (inspection range 0-7 m)

POSITIONING SYSTEM

The positioning is provided by a Leica RTK GPS, enhancing the accuracy and reproducibility of the measurements. The coordinates are also recorded in the radar files.

CAMERA SYSTEM

Four GoPro HD cameras and the connected video recording system allow us to simultaneously capture video footage of the road surface and its surroundings during the georadar survey. The integration of measurement systems is ensured by the coordinates recorded in the audio track of the video recordings.
